Smurfs Wiped Out by UNICEF

It looks like UNICEF did what Gargamel has only dreamed of. Their new ad campaign wipes out the Smurfs leaving only Baby Smurf alive to tell the tale. This seems to be their aims:

UNICEF's Belgian office is using the Smurfs as the centerpiece of a new fundraising initiative to shock viewers into donating money to help children in war-torn regions. The agency also hopes to rehabilitate former child soldiers in Burundi.

That seems like a good cause but I don't see how eradicating a cartoon race would do that though. It seems to show that even the Smurfs aren't safe from being bombed out of existance. It would seem like it would scare kids more then it would get people to donate money.

I mean kids are already scared that at any time they may be blown up by terrorists. Now UNICEF is there to wipe out their imaginary friends too. Kids can't even be safe in their own heads. Perhaps UNICEF will try to wipe out Blue's Clues, or maybe Dora the Explorer next. Send money or we drop a Daisy Cutter on Barney. Give me cash or we machine gun the Wiggles. It must be tough to be a kid in this day and age.
