In response to questions from a House Appropriations subcommittee, Petraeus said defensive preparations short of armed guards "can work. You can have water hoses and others that can make it more difficult."
But in a wry tone, he added: "It's tough to be on the end of a water hose if the other guy is on the end of an RPG. So you've got to think your way through that calculation as well."
Some ports don't allow ships with armed guards to enter so what these shippers could do is use a helicopter to let the guards off on shore just before they get into port. That is a lot of extra costs but it is better then having to pay millions in ransom if your boat is hijacked.Plus if they are Americans of Frenchmen on board there is a good chance that the pirates would execute them so guards will certainly go a long way to stopping that.
