AMD swings to profit

Seems like they are taking market share from Intel and this profit number shows it. However I really like this number myself.

Revenue rose 45% to $1.84 billion, including sales of its Spansion flash-memory business, which AMD spun off in an initial public offering last month. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected AMD to chalk up revenue of $1.66 billion.

That is a record for this company. I was afraid that chip spending was going into the toilet after Intel warned of a slowing 2006 forcast.

Intel, which reported its results after financial markets closed on Tuesday, blamed a combination of events, including a chipset shortage, lower prices and a weakness in demand for desktop PCs.

But it seems that AMD taking market share from them may be some of the reason for them showing concern:

Intel also is facing its stiffest competition ever from Advanced Micro Devices Inc., whose chips have drawn praise for outperforming those of its much larger rival. AMD will report its fourth-quarter results on Wednesday.

"Competition is pretty fierce out there right now," said Intel Chief Financial Officer Andy Bryant, who added AMD probably gained market share at Intel's expense.
