At least it seems so in his latest gaffe.
“You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them,” Obama said.
“And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
I think rural Pennsylvanians "cling" to religion and guns because they enjoy going to church and going hunting. 25 years of economic distress is not pushing them into churches and making them rush to Wal-Mart to buy rifles. It is just what this particular group of Americans like to do with their spare time.
I guess Obama's San Fransisco liberal big-wig audience needs to be be given a reason why these people go and "worship invisible men the sky" and "love their guns." After all these things are bad to the "enlightened" liberal establishment. These gurus know what is actually good for these gun-toting, Bible-thumpin, Mexican-hating, globalization-fearing rubes.
Obama doesn't understand that a rural Pennsylvanian will still go to church and will still hunt with or without a huge government that taxes them to death and takes care of them cradle to grave. They vote GOP because the liberal elite challenges their way of life with their anti-gun laws, "death to Christmas" attacks, and support for an anti-religious lifestyle. This "look-down on the rubes" attitude is exactly why more people do not embrace liberal values. How can a person support someone that holds them in such contempt?
