Is The Failed Stimulus Benefiting the Undead or Merely the Dead?

Well at least 72,000 dead people were helped by the stimulus.

The payments, which were part of last year's massive economic recovery package, were meant to increase consumer spending to help stimulate the economy.

But about $18 million went to nearly 72,000 people who were dead, according to the report by the Social Security Administration's inspector general. The report estimates that a little more than half of those payments were returned.

I wonder if these went to specters, ghosts, zombies, or wraiths? My money is on ghosts because spending on shrouds is way down and there is nothing like a $250 to buy a new set.

Rush Limbaugh Calls Obama an Economic Jackass

I'm sure the thin-skinned Obama White House are going to hit back at Rush for saying this stuff.

"Extend the tax cut to everybody, and you'll inspire confidence," Limbaugh argued, saying that added degree of certainty would free business to spend some of the capital they’re holding onto and hire people, “which, once upon a time, we were told, was Obama’s top priority.”

For not getting this, "He's a jackass.  He's an economic illiterate.  He's an economic ignoramus.” 
“And that's being charitable,” Limbaugh said.

I have to agree with Rush here. Raising taxes during a recession is about the worst thing you can possibly to do. All it will do is extend the duration of the recession as the incentive to reinvest cash goes into avoiding higher taxes. Why would you hire more staff to get your business up to $300,000 a year in earnings when the government is going to take a bigger chunk out of your hard work? Instead you would figure a way to get out of paying that 5 - 10% extra in taxes.

Obama is an economic babe in the woods because he hasn't run any sort of business other then his campaign. The fact that he is even thinking about raising taxes during a recession should have tipped people off. I'm sure that is why his economic team left. They may have gotten tired of hearing "the rich should pay their fair share" and "sometimes you have to say you have made enough money" and other bits of economic wisdom from Obama.

Newt Brands Democrats as the Party of Foodstamps

Well I guess you could say that is a fair moniker for the Dems.

He blamed policies by a Democratic Congress and President Barack Obama's administration for pushing the number of people receiving food stamps to historic highs. U.S. Department of Agriculture Data show 41.8 million people were on government nutrition assistance programs in July, up from about 32 million when Obama took office.

Wow that is an 10 million increase in people on food stamps in a little less than 2 years? Now you have to say that the stimulus failed if you have to increase assistance by that much. The idea of the party of the paychecks vs. the party of the food stamps sounds like a pretty good idea. You can also add to the fact that there has been a record increase in poverty on Obama's watch as well.

Underscoring the depth of the recession, a projected 45 million people - or about 15% of the population - were poor last year. In 2008, 13.2% of the country lived in poverty.

The estimated 1.8 percentage-point increase in 2009 is the largest year-to-year uptick since the U.S. started calculating poverty figures in 1959. The previous high came during the 1980 national energy crisis, when the rate soared 1.3 percentage points to 13%.

Perhaps the Dems should be called the "Poverty Party" going forward.

When Plastic Pollution Meets Noise Pollution: Sun Chips Edition

When I read about this a while back I went to check the Sun Chips packaging and sure enough the thing was super loud even if all you did was lightly touch it. Now Frito-Lay is dumping the bags:

Frito-Lay hopes to quiet complaints about its noisy SunChips bags by switching out the biodegradable bags for the old packaging on most flavors.

The company is switching back to original packaging, which is made of a type of plastic, for five of the six varieties of the chips. It will keep the biodegradable bags for its sixth variety, its original plain flavor. That's its second best-selling, after Harvest Cheddar.

This is kind of case-in-point of where usability and "green" don't always match up technologically. The idea seems sound that the chip packages will eventually break down but the sacrifice of noisy bags was too much to bear. You can say this about quite a bit of the "green" economy that Obama keeps pushing.

For instance, it would be nice to have solar panels run all of our energy needs but it just can't compete with coal and oil right now. People will not be able to deal with brown outs or black outs while solar gets up to technological snuff so they stick with what they have now. The whole ideas of people making these sacrifices for the sake of a "green economy" is ludicrous when they can't even hack a noisy chip bag.

CNN Anchor Blasts Jon Stewart and is Fired

Wow the left are starting to go after one another already. It isn't going to be pretty in November.

Sanchez called out Comedy Central host Jon Stewart as a "bigot" for mocking him, and complained that Jews — like Stewart — don't face discrimination. He also suggested that CNN, and perhaps the media industry more broadly, is run by Jews and elitists who look down on Hispanics like himself.

Um most leftists look down on everybody not just Hispanics. They have always have this air of superiority about them that they lord over everyone that doesn't agree with them. The bitter clingers remark by Obama, the Red flyover states, Kerry talking about people believing in quick slogans because they are so dumb.

The Left has a long streak of talking down to people and telling them what is good for them that what they believe in and enjoy is wrong, stupid, or immoral. Jon Stewart is just one of the many who engage in that kind of condensation and anger on his show. I watch it just like how I imagine some liberals watch Bill O'Reilly. They watch until they cannot stomach any more and then change the channel. He is a funny guy so I cut him some slack for his insane far left beliefs.

Rahmbo Out Pete Rouse In

At least this Rouse guy doesn't seem to be the kind of guy that would accost a Congressmen in the shower-room.

Into the breech steps Rouse, an Obama senior adviser known around the White House as a problem-fixing, media-shy strategist and organizer. Rouse is expected to serve as interim chief for several months and may eventually get the permanent job, as the White House is in the midst of reviewing a broader shake-up.

I hope this Rouse guy gets his hands on the remote control so they can turn off Fox News in the Oval Office and concentrate on finding ways to create some jobs.

It Looks Like ObamaCare Won't let you keep your Insurance Plan or Doctor After All

Well, it looks like all the rhetoric about keeping your doctor and the insurance plan you like was strait up lies.

"There's nothing in the bill that says you have to change the health insurance you've got right now. If you were already getting health insurance on your job, then that doesn't change."

Yet hours before he uttered that line, the Boston Globe reported that Harvard Pilgrim Health Care was canceling its Medicare Advantage coverage specifically because of new regulations imposed by Obama's health care law.

The decision "was prompted by a freeze in federal reimbursements and a new requirement that insurers offering the kind of product sold by Harvard Pilgrim -- a Medicare Advantage private fee for service plan -- form a contracted network of doctors who agree to participate for a negotiated amount of money. Under current rules, patients can seek care from any doctor," the Globe reported.

I would be willing to bet that Harvard Pilgrim will not be the only insurance company that will drop or revise their plans as they get closer to the ObamaCare deadline. I can see vast swaths of people having to change their health insurance company or have to scramble for a new doctor going forward. I guess the change we were hoping for came in the form of what doctor and insurance you have.

The Youth Vote Lurches Back to the Right

The Dems must really be losing it when the Youth Vote is starting to turn sour.

A September Rock the Vote poll showed the Democratic advantage in party affiliation has been cut in half since 2008—down to 9 percent from 18. Democrats get 35 percent, Republicans 26 percent, and Independents 29 percent. (2008 Rock the Vote Numbers were 41 D, 23 R, 25 I).

What is interesting is that they are polling very similar on the 9/11 Mosque and the Arizona Immigration Law:

For instance, a majority of voters ages 18-29 side with the majority of the American people against the president on the Arizona immigration law and the Ground Zero Mosque. According to the Rock the Vote poll, they support the Arizona immigration law, 53-44.

On the issue of the Ground Zero Mosque, young people give another surprising answer, opposing it 52-41:

I never thought the Dems would be doing so badly to a group that was so energized for them just 2 years ago.

In a broader shift from 2008, and a foreboding one for Democrats, the federal deficit has crept into the issues most important to young people. It places third in the Rock the Vote poll--close behind concern about jobs and the economy and the cost of college--with 66 percent "very concerned" about it. In 2008, the deficit was 12th of 15 issues for young voters.

This is a left leaning polling group too. What is interesting is that the young are getting it about the deficits. If the Dems keep ramping up the spending that eventually there is no one left to service the debt other then the 18 - 29 year olds.

They will get the burden of repaying the Red Chinese so that Auto-Workers get their sweet pensions. They don't get to have a job because impending tax increases by the Dems are forcing businesses to hoard cash instead of hire young workers. They are now competing for the same job as someone with 20 years of experience who is part of Obama's 10% unemployed.

They get to foot the bill for the health care of seniors and their social security checks as well. Add this to the fact that they might see the mother of all economic implosions if some bright Dem thinks it would be a good idea to default on our debt. You think the Great Recession is bad you ain't see nothing yet. In fact these Rock the Voters might be the only generation in decades that will have it worse off than their parents.Thank Obama and the Dems for your plight kids.

World War One is Finally Over!

Well it was only 92 years, but all of the reparations money has finally been paid back by the "Lousy Hun."

On September 26, 2010 — 92 years after the WWI officially ended — Germany made her last payment of $94 million in reparations “to private individuals, pension funds and corporations holding debenture bonds as agreed under the Treaty of Versailles.”

Too bad we cannot get the rightful sum from the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungry. Those blighters had the unmitigated gall to have dissolved in the meantime. One thing you can say about the Germans is they repay their debts. 92 years of reparations paid in full. That's German banking for you.

Vegas Hotel Firing Death Ray at Guests?

Now this is an only-in-Vegas sort of thing.

Yes, guests at Vdara hotel in Las Vegas now have something else to worry about: being burned alive by the glare of the building's "death ray."

What the heck's a "death ray," you ask? Well, first off, it's not as deadly as it sounds, since no one has actually died from it -- at least not yet. But according to the U.K. Daily Mail, the powerful beams of Nevada sunlight reflecting off the glass hotel onto sections of the hotel's swimming pool area have burned some guests and have melted plastic bags.

It is due to the super-mirrored glass and the concave design of the building. The sunlight is concentrated on the swimming pool. The idea of the sun reflecting off of a building melting plastic bags is unreal. What I think the Vdara needs to do is put up some kind of solar array in the swimming pool area and reuse some of this energy. They could also set up solar cooking stoves so pool goers could enjoy "death-ray cooked meals" as well.

The German Pencil War?

Now this is an interesting bit of history that I had no idea about.

Forget everything you know about corporate rivalries. Apple vs. Microsoft, Ford and General Motors, Coke and Pepsi: They're Johnny-come-latelies.

Two pencil makers here were battling before any of those brands—or the U.S.—even existed.

Their latest duel is over birthdays. Staedtler Mars GmbH this year celebrates its 175th anniversary. Next year, rival Faber-Castell AG fetes its 250th.

Yet Staedtler isn't trumped, because in 2012 it will celebrate the 350th anniversary of its earliest antecedent. City records from 1662 list a pencil craftsman named Friedrich Staedtler, to whom today's company traces its lineage.

I remember Faber-Castell pencils when I was going to high school and doing a lot of drawing. They were always the best of the best but I didn't like how they didn't have an eraser. When I was a kid erasers were mostly junk except for the white plastic click ones that came from Japan. They did make outstanding color pencils though.

I also remember having a Staedtler mechanical pencil at one time or another. They were really nice and technically sound pencils that I used for drawing as well. They remember them having a precise European look to them. They can easily compete with Japanese mechanical pencils I think.

I also went to the Faber-Castell site and they have some seriously upscale mechanical pencils. Too bad most of them are kind of fat for pretty much no reason at all. I guess most people draw with pencils that you have to sharpen. I have been a mechanical pencil guy for years so I would probably fall on the Staedtler side of this war.

For Obama Another Day Another Backyard but he is Finally getting an Earful

I guess he really likes hanging out in peoples backyards or something. However the natives are getting restless:

One man, who described himself as a small business owner manufacturing promotional items like T-shirts and lawn signs, criticized Obama's plans for allowing tax cuts on income over $250,000 a year to expire.

"As the government gets more and more involved in business and more and more involved in taxes, what you're finding is you're strangling those job creation vehicles," the man said.

The president disputed that, saying he's already signed eight pieces of legislation providing small business tax cuts.

Showing some frustration, Obama said: "Your taxes haven't gone up in this administration. Your taxes have gone down in this administration. There's a notion that, well, he's a Democrat so your taxes must have gone up. That's just not true."

In other words this small business owner is telling him to his face that he can't create jobs with his taxes higher. Then Obama just rattles off some crap about small business tax cuts that obviously haven't helped this guy. Way to be on the side of the small businessman.

It is also funny that Obama keeps saying your taxes have gone down. If he means the $400 a year tax cut from the stimulus let me take this time to laugh in Obama's face. That amounted to like $13 a paycheck. Almost no one knows it even happened let alone were helped by it.

New Rolling Stone Article on Obama: Is He supposed to be "Fighting Back?"

I was reading the new Rolling Stone story about Obama imploring the progressive to go out and vote while going after Fox News yet again. (I guess the remote controls at the White House are all broken or something.) However I found this cover photo to be anyone except for a fighter:

His hands are in his pockets like he doesn't care. He has a slightly constipated grimace on his face. I guess that is mild annoyance at all this 10% unemployment talk and Americans hurting that is getting in the way of Cap-and-Trade and Card Check. Or maybe he had some bad arugula.

He is even facing away from us slightly like he needs to run down the corridor as fast as he could to get away from the Rolling Stone Camera man. Oh well, I guess he needs to get used to irrelevance after November. I see many jaunts to Chicago Bulls games and golf in his future while he complains about Fox News and "That Facist Leather Handbag John Boehner."

Tampa Bay Rays Desperate for Fans

You wouldn't think a first place team with one of the best records in baseball has to stoop to this.

In response to the bad press created by Monday night's comments from David Price(notes) and Evan Longoria(notes), the Tampa Bay Rays just announced that they'll be giving away 20,000 tickets — free, gratis, no charge — to Wednesday night's game against the Orioles at Tropicana Field. 

Also if they don't sell out the stadium Wednesday after they give out the 20,000 free tickets they should seriously think about moving the franchise to some place that cares about baseball. Hmm, I wonder if San Antonio or maybe San Jose would think about having an MLB franchise?

Here Comes the Tablets: Blackberry Introduces the Playbook

Hmm I guess I do like the Playbook more than the BlackPad.

Instead of the "BlackPad" (ugh), RIM is calling its 7-inch, camera-packing tablet the BlackBerry PlayBook. CEO Mike Lazaridis showed off the long-rumored device during the keynote of RIM’s BlackBerry developer conference in San Francisco on Monday.


RIM says its new tablet will arrive in the U.S. in early 2011, and in overseas markets in the second quarter of next year. No pricing details yet.

It does look pretty interesting too. I might think about snagging one if the price is okay and I have read som hands-on reviews:

Another Day Another Bad Obama Poll

It seems this losing streak he has going might just be getting started.

Only 38 percent of respondents said Obama deserves to be reelected, even though a majority of voters hold a favorable view of him on a personal level. Forty-four percent said they will vote to oust him, and 13 percent said they will consider voting for someone else.

 

It’s Obama’s policies that are hurting him right now. By a 13-point margin, voters are down on the health care law. In an especially troubling sign, more than half of self-identified independents — 54 percent — have an unfavorable opinion of the law, compared with just 38 percent who have a favorable opinion.

I would be one of the people polled that have a favorable view of Obama personally but I do not want to see him reelected. I would even like to see Hillary run against him for the nomination even though that would never happen. It is the policies that are hurting him right now in my eyes. The stimulus was a massive joke, Obamacare is only in the first innings on how bad it will be, and Financial Reform pretty much amounted to creating more red tape and heaping yet more power on the FED. It has been two years and he might be looking for a Hail Mary pass to save his Presidency.

The Tea Party Driven by Women

It seems that this might be the Conservative version of the National Organization of Women.

Second is the rise of women as a force. They "are the drivers in this election cycle," Ms. Blackburn says. "Something is going on." At tea party events the past 18 months, she started to notice "60% of the crowd is women." 

Why would more women be focusing more intently on politics this year than before? 

Ms. Blackburn hypothesizes: "Women are always focusing on a generation or two down the road. Women make the education and health-care decisions for their families, for their kids, their spouse, their parents. And so they have become more politically involved. They are worried about will people have enough money, how are they going to pay the bills, the tuition, get the kids through school and college." 

I think what they really don't like is that some Washington bureaucrat is trying to maneuver for the job of healthcare and education decision-maker. I mean "cost effectiveness" panels might come out of Obamacare that deem mammograms as "too expensive." I mean only women are effected so Dr. Brother of Rahm might cut them to "bend the cost curve." I would be willing to bet that cervical exams and other sorts of female-only procedures might get the "cost effectiveness" axe as well.

The bad part is that the feminist movement is basically leftist so they would carry Obama's water when it comes to this sort of thing. They won't be fighting for women as hard as the Tea Party 'mama bears" since they will be going up against their own party. I can see them closing ranks so Obama doesn't have to carry the burden of the hated ObamaCare around.

It is also going to be interesting on how these Tea Party women are going to tackle education once they get into power. I could easily see them breaking the power of the teachers unions like Chris Christie is trying to do in New Jersey. Any fiscal sanity they can bring to education will be long overdue.

Obama's Approval Hits New Low Point and the Tea Party Surges

Well, it seems that Americans are completely ignoring the Hope n' Change.

Only 42 percent of Americans now approve of how Obama's handling his job as president, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll. Fifty-four percent disapprove of his performance.

The figures represent a new low-water mark in the CNN/ORC poll for the president, who, almost two years into his term, continues to wrestle with public worries over a sluggish economy and exhaustion with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. 

Here is one part of the poll that should give the Dems pause whenever they try to take apart the Tea Party.

In contrast, half of all likely voters now say they are likely to choose a candidate supported by the conservative Tea Party -- contributing to the GOP's 53 to 44 percent lead when such voters are asked which party's candidate they will choose in November.  

Wow half of all votes support the Tea Party? You can no longer say that the Tea Party is some racist fringe group when half of all Americans in this poll are going to support their candidates. This is after almost constant attack from the Legacy Media and the Dems. I think Americans just gravitate to the message that too much money is confiscated from them and then quickly wasted when government gets bigger and more powerful.

Obama Hits Back at Ahmadinejoke's 9/11 Truther Comments

It is good to see him stick up for this country at long last.

"For him to make a statement like that was inexcusable," Obama told BBC Persian Television in an interview at his New York hotel. "It was offensive. It was hateful. And particularly for him to make the statement here in Manhattan, just a little north of Ground Zero, where families lost their loved ones, people of all faiths, all ethnicities who see this as the seminal tragedy of this generation."

In his Thursday speech, Ahmadinejad suggested it's worth investigating allegations that "some segments within the U.S. government" orchestrated the attacks in a bid to aid Israel.

What should put all this Truther BS to rest is Obama winning the Presidency. I mean if it was a conspiracy hatched by the GOP or Bush or whomever Obama would have gotten wind of it. If not him then one of his functionaries would have leaked this information to damage the GOP forever. Also in the culture of celebrity today I would bet that at least one of the 1000s of people that had to be involved would have talked by now.  It is good to finally draw a link between Holocaust deniers and the Truther using the crazy-man boss of Iran.

Blockbuster Files for Chaper 11

Well I guess Netflix and Redbox have finally brought them low.

The prepackaged bankruptcy case, in the works since the spring, marks the end of an era that Blockbuster and its gold-and-blue torn ticket logo helped establish. Americans used to troop to video stores on Friday for the latest movies. Now, they're skipping Blockbuster and watching movies from DVD-by-mail services like Netflix Inc., cable video on demand and Redbox vending machines.

It might come out of bankruptcy by just concentrating on main and a digital component. Unfortunately, the only think they have left is their brand. I think Netflix and Redbox will be way ahead of them and they will forever be playing catch-up. I mean Netflix is already a titan with like 15 million subscribers.They might even be cutting in on cable companies according to this:

A new report from Credit Suisse says almost 30% of Netflix subscribers aged 18-24 are using Netflix in lieu of cable or satellite TV. (17% of all users are skipping cable for Netflix.)

I mean without live sports cable has little to offer that demographic. In fact with ESPN3 I can see many people eventually skipping cable all together and going totally online for their TV viewing.

A Funny Difference Between Democrats and Republicans

This one statement had me laughing out loud in an article on why Obama doesn't connect with middle class Americans.

It’s a long time now since Obama was a community organizer. Even then, he might have been more comfortable dealing with communities than with individuals. Democrats are best with groups. If I break down on the side of the road, I hope a Republican stops -- he’ll fix my flat and offer me a drink. A Democrat will get busy forming a Committee to Protect Women Who Own Vulnerable Cars.

Obama would probably blame the flat tire on the Bush Administration cutting road spending so the tire wore thin too early and suffered a flat. Then he would walk away peering at his Blackberry for something more interesting than a woman on the side of the road with a flat tire.

Obama Shows Up in Someones Elses Backyard: This Time to Sell Health Insurance

I think these backyard talks are getting kind of tacky.

Just six weeks before midterm elections expected to punish Democrats, the president surrounded himself in a Virginia backyard with people who benefited from the law — a hemophiliac fearful of lifetime coverage limits that will now be eliminated, a senior citizen who got help with her heart medications.

Acknowledging that the economy is the foremost concern, Obama nonetheless insisted, "Health care was one of those issues that we could no longer ignore."

I hope that hemophiliac isn't covered by a doctor that doesn't accept Medicaid or his preferred form of treatment doesn't get the Cost-Effectiveness panels "seal of death." Also that senior citizen might have to pay more for that medicine (or get it denied if the Cost-Effectiveness panel gets their way) depending on how her insurance works out. She will also get to see her Medicare cut to "bend the cost curve." What is really interesting is to see how much insurance companies will jack up rates in the next 3 years to cover all of the free stuff they will have to account for:

Among benefits taking effect this week:

_Young adults can remain on their family's health plan until they turn 26.

_Free immunizations for kids.

_Free preventive care, like mammograms and cholesterol screenings.

_No more lifetime coverage limits, and annual limits start to phase out.

_Plans can't cancel coverage for people who get sick.

_No denial of coverage to kids with pre-existing health conditions.

Remember that they are not going to get all the new health insurance customers until 2014 so they will jack up rates between now and then. I wonder how the White House is going to fight against them other then just ramping up the rhetoric. I mean all the insurance companies will have to say is that Obamacare is making us raise your insurance by 15% and since people hate it already (40% disapprove) they will deflect the blame from themselves.

New Revalation About the Titanic Sinking

It seems that user error and greed may have downed the huge ship.

"Instead of steering Titanic safely round to the left of the iceberg, once it had been spotted dead ahead, the steersman, Robert Hitchins, had panicked and turned it the wrong way."

Patten, who made the revelations to coincide with the publication of her new novel "Good as Gold" into which her account of events are woven, said that the conversion from sail ships to steam meant there were two different steering systems.

Crucially, one system meant turning the wheel one way and the other in completely the opposite direction.

Once the mistake had been made, Patten added, "they only had four minutes to change course and by the time (first officer William) Murdoch spotted Hitchins' mistake and then tried to rectify it, it was too late."

That would have been okay but here is where the greed component came in:

There he heard not only about the fatal mistake but also the fact that J. Bruce Ismay, chairman of Titanic's owner the White Star Line persuaded the captain to continue sailing, sinking the ship hours faster than would otherwise have happened.

"If Titanic had stood still, she would have survived at least until the rescue ship came and no one need have died," Patten said.

That pretty much means that Ismay may have doomed 1500 people with his decision to keep going instead of just drifting in the water to wait for the rescue ship.

Stock Research: Rackspace Hosting (RAX)

I have been studying Rackspace (RAX) for a while and it seems like an interesting opportunity.

What they do:

They are a cloud computing company that provides different services to other IT outfits. They are kind of like a rental service for servers on the Internet. Instead of buying the server and having it shipped to you they host it at their site and you connect to it via a browser. They also offer higher end stuff like managed hosting and private cloud services so that companies can virtualize their IT environment.

What they have going for them:

They seem to be growing like a weed with 24.1% annual revenue growth and 42.8% net income growth per year. They are in a sweet spot of cloud computing which is supposed to be growing like crazy according to some sources I have seen. This site says by 2012, customers are expected to spend $42 billion on cloud computing. This is all basically from almost nothing just a few years ago.

Imagine how much companies will be spending in 2020 when we expect to create 35 Zettabytes of data. A Zettabyte is 1 billion terabytes. You can store about 1000 movies in a 1 terabyte drive so you can do the math on how much capacity needs to be created to cover this demand. So cloud computing might be one of the few ways a company can add capacity without building entire server farms for their data.

So the potential market they are in is big and they also provide 24/7 support by email, phone, and IM chatting. This is their so-called Fanatical Support. I think support is very important when you are trying to do something like virtualizing a data center so this might be quite a built-in advantage over someone like Amazon EC2 which charges $400 for their support.

They don't have much debt with $169 million which is a little more then the amount of cash that they have on their books. I kind of like them to have none since most high-tech firms have zero but they seem to be expanding as fast as they can. They are even hiring executives from other high tech firms like Ebay. They seem to have an eye on international expansion as well. Their execs seem to be buying the stock like crazy as well to the tune of 18 million shares.

There is also consolidation in their industry with their competitor 3Par in a bidding war between HP and Dell. Both companies wanted to pump up their margins and get more into the service field and not just sell printers and PCs. Buying a growing company (at what some people believe is an inflated price) that already owns the infrastructure and software to enable cloud computing is far superior than trying to build something themselves. I wouldn't be surprised to see some other high tech behemoth like Dell, Oracle, or SAP to come sniffing around Rackspace looking to make a deal.

Things that are Against Them:

They are trading at an 80 P/E which is phenomenally high even for a company growing as fast as they are. Their competitors are Amazon and Google two of the largest and most powerful tech firms out there. Those two companies are trading at a 62 P/E and a 22 P/E respectively. So with a P/E that high any stumble will smack the stock. It seems other investors think the same way because the short interest is at 33% of float.

You also have the headwind that some companies might not want to expand right now and would rather hold on to their cash. This could slow Rackspaces' revenue growth at the time that they are shelling out big bucks to expand. However, these companies can't wait forever since their data and server needs will grow as fast as they hope to.

Bottom Line:

I think the stock is kind of pricey here and would be a good buy at some sort of pullback to about $20 - $21. However, you will be paying for a company that is in a very sweet spot and is growing like crazy so the premium might be worth it in the long run.

The GOP Embraces the Tea Party

Well it is about time they did.

But Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, was offering plenty of salve Tuesday.

"I think the tea party's been a very constructive movement in American politics," he said. "People are tired of everything thrown at them from Washington, and they are not going to take it anymore. We have embraced their enthusiasm and their energy in the Republican primaries and now we're strongly behind all the Republican nominees, including a number of candidates who are very actively supported by the tea party movement."

I think they are afraid that many Tea Party candidates are going to win and there will be a split in the party. I mean who are the GOP going to support anyway the Democrat running against them?

Rats off a Sinking Ship: Larry Summers Edition

It has only been 2 years and it seems there is a stampede to the door for the Obama advisors.

Summers is the third high-level member of Obama's economic team to leave in recent months, following the departure of budget director Peter Orszag and Christina Romer, head of the Council of Economic Advisers, both of whom left this summer. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner would be the only one of Obama's top-tier economic advisers to remain with the administration should be stay through the end of the year.

I'm betting on Geithner being shown the door right after the election. The last thing Obama needs is a market panic set off by the uncertainty of losing every member of his economic team with 10% unemployment and 1.6% GDP growth.

Dems Avoid Obama Like They Owe Him Money

It seems Russ Feingold has something better to do then meet with Obama at some labor rally in Wisconsin.

Yet Feingold's decision to skip the Obama labor union rally is unusual, particularly since it's Labor Day weekend — the traditional kickoff of the fall campaign season— and unions have been Feingold's biggest boosters in the state. Feingold's disappearing act will be doubly conspicuous, since gubernatorial hopeful Tom Barrett, the other statewide Democratic candidate, is scheduled to be there.

I keep thinking of a scene from a movie where whenever Obama pops up in their state people immediately run off in the opposite direction shouting over their shoulder "I'll talk to you some other time, I have to visit my sick Grandma in the hospital."

Romer Admits the Stimulus Failed

Well, it is nice that someone in the White House is a realist even when they have both feet out the door.

Calling the economic recovery “insufficient”, she noted that a 0.6% drop in the unemployment rate still leaves unemployment unbearably high. “Real GDP is growing, but not fast enough to create the hundreds of thousands of jobs each month that we need to return employment to its pre-crisis levels,” she said.

Too bad she is leaving because the second part of this sentiment is just about right IMO:

"While we’d all like to find the inexpensive, magic bullet to our economic troubles, the truth is, it almost surely doesn’t exist. The only surefire way for policy makers to increase aggregate demand in the short-run is for the government to spend more and tax less. And in my view we should be moving forward on both fronts… the key is that we need to take action, and we need to do it quickly."

The spending more part is not realistic since we are spending at the fastest rate in US History. However, the taxing less part sounds really good to me. If you give more people the money they worked for instead of having the government set it on fire then more people will be helped by it.

Letting the Bush Tax Cuts Expire only for the Rich? Think Again

I'm pretty sure that people in this category aren't rich.

Taxpayers making between $40,000 and $50,000 a year would get hit with an average income tax increase of $923 next year. Those making between $50,000 and $75,000 would face an average increase of $1,126, according to estimates by the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation.

If Obama really wants to win some applause from these people he would just double the tax cuts on the middle class so everyone receives like $2000/year in cuts right off the bat. That would actually stimulate the economy (even if people just use it to pay off debt) better then the stupid stuff they are trying now.

Insane Environmentalist Takes Hostages at Discovery Channel

I really hope we don't get any more of these crazy people going forward. I'm just glad he was the only person killed and not any of his hostages.

A planetary law, such as China's one-child policy, is the only way to reverse the disastrous global birthrate currently, which is one million births every four days.

I really hope this "kill all humans to save the environment" strain of thought espoused by Lee and Francis is going to be stamped out of the environmental movement. The whole idea of sterilizing humans to "control the population" ties these people right to the eugenicist ideas of the Nazis.

The Best Pre-College Primer I Have Ever Read

This is required reading that should be handed out with the Orientation Guide when you enroll in a new college.

And so, dear students, welcome back! Your generation is going to have dig its own way out of the hole my generation has dug for you (thanks for the Medicare, kids, and sorry about the deficit!), but here are a few tips that may help you get the best out of your college years.

The tips are outstanding and I especially like this one:

Creativity, integrity and entrepreneurial initiative will pay off; following the old rules and hoping for the old rewards is a road to frustration. You have to fight the tendency of the educational system to turn you into a timeserving baby bureaucrat, following the rules and waiting for the inevitable promotion.

As you go through college, think about ways you can fight the pressures of institutionalization. Work or volunteer — not just for money, but to keep your hand in the real world. Live off campus. Start a business. Shake things up.

Yup, if you run a small business selling stuff on Amazon you will already be ahead of most of your professors as well as the entire Obama White House. You will know the crushing burden of taxes and begin to figure out that if you run a business you don't pay taxes your customers do.

Hopefully, you will have to make a payroll, purchase inventory, or maybe just take a big risk in order to get your pay. You will have the ability to make money with your own two hands and your brain and not just wait for the next batch of grant money or for your public workers union to shake down your State House.

If you are lucky you will start the next Microsoft or Dell Computers and not need to finish college like Bill Gates or Michael Dell. This real world education will take you much farther than taking a hundred credits worth of ethnic studies or modern dance.

Location Based Sharing is Not as Popular As You Might Think

I guess people just don't want to hang a rob my house sign up every time they go on Foursquare or Facebook Places.

It seems like everyone's doing location these days in one form or another, but popular services like Foursquare or Facebook Places aren't just about using your location to find a good place to eat nearby. They're about sharing your location. The New York Times reports that despite all the attention these location sharing services are, most people still don't use them:

I guess this to me is the same thing as watching TV on your phone. An interesting technology that I wouldn't use in 100 years. The idea of sharing with potentially 100s of people your exact whereabouts is just too 1984 for my tastes.

I was watching a GPS sharing commercial for a cell phone that had these people dressed up as big dots and showing their location on some sort of tracking app. What reason would a non-CIA agent want to use such a thing? If I wanted to know where my friends are I would just ask them instead of tracking them like KGB assets. That is pretty much why I have ignored all of the location apps out there and will continue to ignore them in the future.

When Should you Buy Your Airline Tickets? Exactly 8 weeks Before Your Flight

That is according to this formula created by economist Makoto Watanabe.

Like any such rule, I'm sure you'll find plenty of exceptions, but if you don't enjoy spending a lot of time agonizing about when to buy an airline ticket, it's a good rule of thumb to have on hand. In addition to the eight-week rule, Watanabe's formula also suggests that tickets are cheapest in the afternoon, according to The Observer. We can't explain all the science to you [apparently the eight-week formula looks a little something like ∏^A = gU_G + min(k - g, (1 - g)(1 - r))], and the findings, which will be published in the Economic Journal, aren't yet available.

Also according to Watanabe the best time to buy the tickets is in the afternoon. I wonder why that is? I figure that the fare rate meetings at the Airlines occur in the morning and they update the servers after lunch. I guess this is so people coming home from work can book their non-business flights at 7 - 8 PM their time. I figure the selection is better in the afternoon because the fares have just been updated and all the seats are in play.

I Hope You Aren't a Home Builder in California: CalGreen Just Cost you Your Job

I thought the state was going bankrupt and needed construction jobs. This must be the dagger in its heart that will kill the building industry in California.

The level of detail specified by CALGreen is shocking. The new laws regulate every aspect of construction, far beyond what you might have thought possible. Mandates stipulate how builders handle storm water pollution prevention, bicycle parking, changing rooms, the paint used for marking parking stalls, "light pollution", grading and paving, all water use (including "multiple showerheads serving one shower" and all plumbing fixtures), irrigation design standards, handling of construction waste material, handling of excavated soil, fireplace design and testing, indoor moisture control, CO2 monitoring systems (not carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, which humans exhale), all HVAC standards (including required "ozone depletion and greenhouse gas reductions") and everything in between... including the kitchen sink.

About the only person that will jump through all these hoops just to build a building in California are the Federal Government or the States. What is really hilarious is all the different California State groups that are going to get in on the act:

Among the interlocking agencies that must be satisfied in order to build: the State Department of Housing and Community Development, the Division of the State Architect, the California Building Standards Commission, the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, CALBO (California Building Officials), local chapters of the International Code Council, the California Air Resources Board, and the California Building Industry Association.

That is a lot of people to bribe in order to grease the wheels. I guess all the builders put out a job can always be hired by one of these agencies to make sure no one builds anything anywhere in the state.

I wonder if they thought about how this will decimate the Hispanic workers in the construction sector as well? I mean what construction company will comply with this mess if they can somehow avoid it? Maybe by declaring CALGreen as racist and anti-immigrant they will ditch it.

You can make calls from your Gmail?

Yesterday, Google began rolling out the ability to text and make calls from within Gmail.

Google has been working on VOIP with Google Voice for a while now, but this puts calling features right in the face of millions of users, putting Google in direct competition with soon-to-be-public Skype.

What it will really kill is Land Line Phones. They have already been dealt a mortal blow by cell phones and if Google Voice becomes popular it will kill them dead. In fact the idea of an Android App that lets you to connect to Google Voice and suddenly you don't even need the calling or texting function on your cell anymore. Talk about Google getting revenge for the markets cold reception shown toward its own phone foray.

Intel CEO Blasts the White House

Well it seems that Cramer is no the only one to become disillusioned by the economic failure of the White House.

Take factories. "I can tell you definitively that it costs $1 billion more per factory for me to build, equip, and operate a semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States," Otellini said.

The rub: Ninety percent of that additional cost of a $4 billion factory is not labor but the cost to comply with taxes and regulations that other nations don't impose. (Cypress Semiconductor CEO T.J. Rodgers elaborated on this in an interview with CNET, saying the problem is not higher U.S. wages but antibusiness laws: "The killer factor in California for a manufacturer to create, say, a thousand blue-collar jobs is a hostile government that doesn't want you there and demonstrates it in thousands of ways.")

In other words those 1000s of high paying semiconductor jobs will instead go to Indians or Chinese and not to Americans. The bad part too is that these jobs are exactly the type that need to be created to raise our GDP for years to come. I think Otellini is finally saying publicly that Obama might be damaging businesses more then people realize. I could see the writing on the wall when he lumped venture capitalists in with hedge fund managers. They couldn't be more different in everything they do.

The bad part is that I would be willing to bet that Otellini has just been put on some enemies list in the White House. Instead of listening to his warnings they are hatching plans to get all of their machines with AMD processors or some other such nonsense. The government picks the winners and losers in the Obamaconomy and not marketplace or the company with the best product.

In any case I hope Otellini throws Intel's weight behind some pro-market GOP candidates to better block to job destruction coming out of the White House.

Cramer Finally Sours on Obama

It is about time Jim! Welcome to the club.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that there is almost a universal belief among all of the large firms -- mutual and hedge and research -- that if this president gets his way and the House and Senate stay Democrat we are going to decline precipitously. It is so palpable that it overrides any data that could come out, whether it be earnings, or inflation, or spending, or employment itself.

But no one will say it!

It is amazing to me that no one will break ranks and say out loud what they say to me 10 times a day: "This president hates business, hates successful business people, and hates the basic way business is done in this country!"

Believe me, not only is it unspoken but it is vehemently and viscerally mutual. I can't find a business person who, privately, will say a good word about this guy or his team. He is despised. Just not openly. Never will be. Too dangerous. Seditious even.

Well they big Wall Street firms got stabbed in the back by Obama even after giving millions to his campaign. He is totally anti-business and anti-success with his statement "eventually you have to say you have made enough money." Who is he to make that decision?

The Chrysler bailout told me all I needed to know about his economic ideology. They screwed the long term debt holders and gave an equity stake to the Unions. If he could do the same to every other company in America he would. I is as simple as that.

Plus, his team doesn't know how to make a private sector job to save their skins. As I point out over and over he doesn't have a single person that has run a lemonade stand anywhere in his administration. All he knows how to do is raise taxes and borrow trillions from the Red Chinese that he immediately flushes down the toilet and then blames Bush, the GOP, Rush Limbaugh, or whomever for screwing up.

Mark my words, you will see a multi-month rally as soon as the GOP retakes Congress because businesses know that Obama's job killing agenda will be blocked.

Court Rules that the Feds can Put a GPS on Your Car when it is Sitting in your Driveway

Hmm, I wonder if this means that electric fence sales will start to go up?

Government agents can sneak onto your property in the middle of the night, put a GPS device on the bottom of your car and keep track of everywhere you go. This doesn't violate your Fourth Amendment rights, because you do not have any reasonable expectation of privacy in your own driveway - and no reasonable expectation that the government isn't tracking your movements.

Also they ruled that the Feds can keep the GPS device on your car indefinitely without a warrant. That part is still up in the air and the Supreme Court will probably have to rule on it eventually. I wonder if the Feds still have their 4th Amendment rights in place if someone put a GPS device on their car?

48% of Americans Now Think Obama's Views are Extreme

Hmm, I think Americans are starting to wish they had Hillary as Pres instead of Obama.

Forty-eight percent (48%) of U.S. voters now regard President Obama’s political views as extreme. Forty-two percent (42%) place his views in the mainstream, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

By comparison, 51% see the views of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as mainstream. Thirty-five percent (35%) think Clinton’s views are extreme. Fourteen percent (14%) are undecided.

I think supporting the 9/11 Mosque (then recanting soon afterward) right after bungling the oil spill has damaged the Presidency to the core. I think vacationing and keeping himself out of the public eye while waiting for some kind of good economic news is all he can do right now.

New Solar System Found

Now this is a pretty interesting find.

The planets and their own sun-like star are about 127 light-years from Earth, astronomers with the European Southern Observatory said. It is one of just 15 planetary systems known to have more than three worlds.

The five planets circle their parent star, HD 10180, in a regular pattern like the planets of our solar system, only in a more compact arrangement, the researchers said.

Of the two potential additional planets that may be present, one may have a mass that is the closest to the Earth's yet seen, if it is confirmed, they added.

Now we need to train our radio telescopes that way to see if that earth-like planet actually has aliens on it that are able to create communication technology. The idea that it is only 127 light years away would make my idea of space travel possible.

Sorry Fibromyalgia Sufferers Addicts Took your Drug

Well I guess it all came down to the *potential* of people to abuse the drug once it is sold to a larger population.

A panel of experts voted 20-2 that the Food and Drug Administration should not approve a powerful sedative to treat fibromyalgia, a type of chronic pain. The news is a blow to maker Jazz Pharmaceuticals.

I think this might be a new era in risk-mitigation form the FDA. This REMS is now as important (or in this case much more important) than the efficacy data:

The panel vote is more confirmation of what I wrote this morning (see: The FDA’s New Power): That risk management programs, known as Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies or REMS, are becoming one of the pivotal issues when it comes to the approval of new drugs. These have resulted in delays for Johnson & Johnson, Theravance, and Amgen, and are increasingly the major factor in FDA drug approvals. REMS are one of the most important factors for biotechnology investors to track.

I guess the fear of lawsuits and having to pull the drug off the market is just too great now. Oh well, I guess fibromyalgia sufferers have that much longer to wait for their relief.

Intel Buys Out McAfee for $7.7B

I guess the chip business is just not lucrative enough for them.

The all-cash deal announced Thursday marks the biggest acquisition in Intel's 42-year history, an expensive example of Intel's commitment to sell more than chips for personal computers and servers. It is the sixth biggest deal globally between two technology companies over the past 3 1/2 years, according to Capital IQ, a division of Standard & Poor's.

I'm wondering if this might usher in the world of having the security suite on a computer run off of a chip. I like the idea of running the AV scan and the anti-spyware program directly off of the motherboard. That way they will be even harder to attack since there is no vulnerable OS to add surface area to said attack. I wonder if they will go after a cloud vendor or even a hard-drive company next.

Jazz Pharmaceuticals Fibromyalgia drug Moves One Step Closer to Approval

Well it seems that the FDA panel is fairly positive about the drug, Rekinla according to this article.

Investors are all jazzed up about Jazz Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: JAZZ) after the Food and Drug Administration posted on its website fairly positive documents on the company's fibromyalgia drug, JZP-6. A panel of experts will make a recommendation to the agency at Friday's advisory committee meeting. Investors boosted shares as much as 16% before mellowing later in the day.

The drug that treats debilitating pain seems to be on the right path. The documents conclude that the company "provided sufficient evidence to support the efficacy" of the drug. It doesn't get much better than that.

Here is a link to the FDA briefing document on the drug. I think one thing the drug has going for it is that it has already been used for 8 years to treat narcolepsy. The fibromyalgia use of the drug would have the same side effects and Schedule III controlled substance status as that drug. I guess the only bad part is that quite a few more people suffer from fibromyalgia than from narcolepsy so the drug would be more widely available.

College Football Stunner: BYU to Go Independent in Football and Join the WAC in other Sports

Now this is some very interesting news and fits BYUs plans according to this article.

BYU will become an independent in football and put its basketball and non-revenue sports in the Western Athletic Conference starting in 2011 according to the Salt Lake City Tribune. It’s similar to the arrangement Notre Dame has with the Big East

They did this so that they could expand their BYU-TV network which is mostly made up of Mormon-related content. With the addition of football they could expand their message to football fans as well as Mormons. It makes quite a bit of sense and it renews rivalries with University of Hawaii from ages ago. They also don't have to worry about money since they are bankrolled by the Mormon church already.

Bill Introduced to Bail out the Teamsters Pension Fund

So the Teamsters mismanaged their own pension fund and they want us to pick up the tab?

Sen. Robert Casey (D., Pa.) and Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D., N.D.) are pushing legislation that would commit taxpayers’ dollars to bailing out the Teamsters’ retirement pension fund. The financial crisis and the Great Recession may have upset your retirement plans, but that’s not reason that politically connected union thugs have to share the pain.

I mean they gave a piece of the Chrysler Bailout to the United Autoworkers so I don't see how this is the a stretch for the Dems. They look at tax payer money as theirs so they can dole it out to their Union cronies whenever they see fit.

I would be willing to bet that the next bailout will be directed at the Public Worker Pension Funds which are facing record shortfalls as well. The article points out that the shortfall in California's Pension Fund is bigger that the GDP of Saudi Arabia. If go on the hook for that money there is no telling how bigger our debt can go.

Harry Reid Grasps for Straws: Says he is Against 9/11 Mosque

I think he is really battling for his political life coming out against Obama on this issue.

Locked in a tight race, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid became the highest profile Democrat to respond to Obama, who last week backed the right for the developers to build a mosque near ground zero. Since his comments Friday, the Democratic president and his aides have worked to explain the statement, which drew criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike.

"The First Amendment protects freedom of religion," said Jim Manley, a Reid spokesman. "Senator Reid respects that, but thinks that the mosque should be built some place else."

I have to agree that the First Amendment protects the building of the mosque but Reid jumping on this issue that has nothing to do with Nevada is just a politically motivated joke. I have to say that this is a New York matter and only they should have a real say in putting the mosque in or not.

Another Economic Headwind: Boomers Cutting Back

I guess the Generation of Conspicuous Consumption is coming the realization that they may not have saved enough for retirement. The bad part is if they pull in the horns on spending that will take the last legs out of any recovery.

Low yields present retirees with a difficult choice: Accept the lower income offered by safer bonds, or take the risk of staying in the stock market. Either way, their predicament could put a long-term damper on the consumer spending that typically drives U.S. growth.

Plus many of their houses are underwater so they will feel even less rich than they did before. So that is even less of an incentive to spend money during retirement. You add that to the fact that young people are spending less as well because they can't find a job right out of college and you see slow consumer spending for years to come.

However, I would be willing to bet that there will be some sort of rise in Social Security based on borrowed money. You can see the Dems using it as a political tactic to get more seniors to support them. Then they could use it as scare tactics by saying the GOP "will slash Social Security to the bone" if you don't keep the Dems in power.

Could the Hindenburg Omen Foretell a Market Crash?

Oh the humanity! This article points out an interesting indicator of a possible market drop off coming down the pike.

But first the facts. There was a correction in the markets this week, and the sell-off triggered the Hindenburg conditions. The Hindenburg Omen occurs when an unusually high number of companies in the New York Stock Exchange reach 52-week highs and lows at the same time. The proportion of NYSE stock highs and lows must both exceed 2.2% of the total listed on the exchange. The Hindenburg Omen last occurred in October 2008, according to UBS data.

The probability of a move greater than 5% to the downside after a confirmed Hindenburg Omen was 77%, according to historical data quoted on Benzinga. It usually takes place within 40 days of the first Hindenburg event. The probability of a panic sellout was 41% and the probability of a major stock market crash was 24%.

There seems to have been 5 of them right before Black Monday in 1987, and 6 of them before the Tech Wreck in 2000 according to this research site. Also if you count 40 days from the first Hindenburg Omen which was Thursday we get the 8th of October which will be just 4 trade days away from the 18th which was Black Monday in 1987.

Even if this is not true it is a good idea to take some money off the table until growth picks back up. I have moved into cash for the most part and intend to buy back in when stocks are cheaper. I mean the Fed is talking about slowdown and is buying Treasuries. The stimulus was a absolute failure and we are still barely creating any jobs (71,000 new jobs this last month is a joke.) Also companies have stopped building inventories so it is up to the beleaguered consumer to actually prop up the GDP.

Also we have a White House that doesn't know how to create a job without spending $70,000 or more per job. Plus, they seem hell bent to raise taxes during a recession which is bad no matter what sort of economist you are. So stocks will probably languish for a while.

Hiding in some dark place hatching foul schemes? Nope, greeting returning troops at the Dallas/Ft. Worth airpost with a handshake and a job well done. I have a feeling that Obama will be nowhere to be found in 2013 after he loses the election.

Emergency Exit America?

Hmm this WSJ article has given me an idea about what is currently happening in the US.

Mr. Hart said the 2010 contest is being pulled by the sentiment associated with the JetBlue flight attendant who fled his plane via the emergency chute after an altercation with a passenger. Calling it the "JetBlue election," Mr. Hart said: "Everyone's hurling invective and they're all taking the emergency exit."

I think the flight attendant that cussed out the customers and took the emergency chute (and the positive reception his actions have gained) is indicative of things that are happening now. It first happened with the Tea Parties last year where they got to vent directly to the Congress. Then you had the Congress simply ignore them and pass Obamacare anyway.

People are just tired of the government, business, and whomever not listening to them. In this case an unruly passenger was rude and obnoxious and did not listen to this flight attendant. That passenger might represent all of the people that are not listening and just do whatever they want.

So you can replace that passenger with the White House that bulldozes things like Obamacare through even though 60% of people don't want it. This passenger also represents Congress who not only doesn't listen but has open disdain for the common man as well. This passenger also represents big business who would rather hoard billions then hire people. They are hoarding because the White House and Congress are creating uncertainty and they want to wait and see what the landscape will be. It doesn't matter what the reason is because it is still making people angry.

So with uncertainty and the feeling that those who are in charge seem to be incompetent and you have the Emergency Exit America. People just want to forget all about the White House, Financial "reform," Obamacare, and the failed stimulus. This is already manifesting itself in the drop in productivity, Obama's abysmal approval numbers, and drop in consumer confidence that we have seen recently. People just want to hunker down grab a few beers and jump down the emergency chute out of everything.

The Pushback Against College Life

Well, it seems that people are finally doing a cost-benefit analysis when it comes to college in general.

Many of the schools Mr. Brandon describes are education-free zones, where students' eternal obligations—do the assigned reading, participate in class, hand in assignments—no longer apply. The book's title refers to the fact that only 30% of students enrolled in liberal-arts colleges graduate in four years. Roughly 60% take at least six years to get their degrees. That may be fine with many schools, whose administrators see dollar signs in those extra semesters.

The capitalist in me sees this as perfectly understandable behavior to keep the kids using your product as long as humanly possible. However, if they go through these lengths then they need to be exposed.

In an effort to win applicants, Mr. Brandon says, colleges dumb down the curriculum and inflate grades, prod students to take out loans they cannot afford, and cover up date rape and other undergraduate crime. The members of the faculty go along with the administration's insistence on lowering standards out of fear of losing their jobs.

I have to agree that there are big problems with colleges and they should be addressed before Obama throws even more money their way in his plan to pump out 8 million more graduates. Many people are finally coming to the understanding that the only true value in college is in the hard sciences and business.

Everything else is a waste of money. Anyone majoring in something with a two word title like Interpretive Dance is just taking tens of thousands of dollars and setting them on fire. About the only thing the liberal arts portion of college is good for is getting people into law school.

Campuses are full of anti-American dinosaurs like Ward Churchill who cannot be fired because they are tenured up the hilt. I mean some political science departments should just change their names to Communist Studies. Leftist sentiment where America is evil, capitalism is wrong, and our enemies have a point seem to be everywhere.

The worst part is that parents keep shelling out larger and larger piles of money to subsidize the jobs of people like Churchill. I hope books like The Five-Year Party can get more parents to think about not only where they send their kids but what they are learning there as well.

White House Lashes Out at Liberals

Too bad I pretty much agree with Gibbs on this statement.

The White House was on the defensive Tuesday after press secretary Robert Gibbs lashed out at liberals he dubbed the "professional left," saying some of them should be drug-tested.

Gibbs contended that some progressives critical of President Barack Obama wouldn't be satisfied until the Pentagon was eliminated and Canadian-style health care ushered into the U.S. Some of them wouldn't even be happy if anti-war congressman Dennis Kucinich were president, according to Gibbs.

I think many of them should be drug tested and will probably come up positive. Also they cannot be satisfied no matter what Obama does. They are against Guantanamo but have no idea where to put the terrorists held there. They don't want Hellfire missiles fired at Al-Quida even though they have no better way of handling them.

Most of them live in academia where the only contact they have with companies that create jobs is trying to hit them up for grant money. They only see regular Americans only when they fly over them. So in their insular, protected little worlds they think Obama is George W. Bush because they never have to see massive failure in handouts like in Greece, run a company or a country, or deal effectively with Al-Quida killers.

So they go against the closest thing they will ever have to a progressive President. Also after the bungling and ineptitude shown by this President they may never have another. I mean they need to understand that they are 20% of the population and they need get at least 50% on board to even have a chance at any of their schemes. The whole idea of them getting anyone more progressive than Obama is crazy so they should be okay with the guy they have now.

Dems Pass State Bailout bill

Well it looks like we will be blowing more money to "save" jobs.

The legislation provides $10 billion to school districts to rehire laid-off teachers or ensure that more teachers won't be let go before the new school year begins. The Education Department estimates that that could save 160,000 jobs.

That is $62,500 per job saved. Of course the average salary for a teacher is less than $45,000 each. So that means we overpaid by $17,000 per each job "saved." I would be willing to bet that most of this money will go to pad the bloated bureaucracies at the department of education in many states. I can't wait until the CBO goes over this thing next year and they find out is "saved" like 25,000 jobs or something similar.
